From 18 November 2025, all company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) will face mandatory ID verification with Companies House. This new requirement, introduced under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, aims to improve transparency and crack down on fraud.

To help you stay compliant (and avoid last-minute stress), we’ve pulled together a clear Q&A guide with everything you need to know.

What does the ID verification process involve?

Verifying your identity with Companies House will involve providing valid photo ID (such as a passport or driving licence) and completing the verification process. Please note that you will need to set up a GOV.UK One Account if you haven’t already got one. You will be unable to complete the verification process without an account.

Once verified, you will receive a personal code which must be provided when filing your company’s confirmation statement or PSC details.

Why is this being introduced?

The government is introducing ID verification for a number of reasons including:

  • To reduce fraudulent company appointments
  • Improve transparency of company ownership
  • Increase trust in the accuracy of Companies House records

How do I complete the ID verification?

There are two options for completing the ID verification:

  • You can verify directly with Companies House by using the “Verify your identity” service via GOV.UK One Login.
  • Alternatively, you can verify through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – such as PKB. As an ACSP, we can complete the verification for you. Because we have already carried out our own ID checks as part of our client due diligence, we are authorised to confirm your identity with Companies House.

When do I need to act?

18 November 2025 is the start of a 12-month transition period, not a single-day deadline.

Directors will need to include their personal code on the company’s next confirmation statement after that date.

PSCs will need to provide their code either within 14 days of their company’s confirmation statement or within 14 days of the start of their birth month, depending on their circumstances.

Acting early is strongly advised to avoid last-minute delays or penalties.

What happens if I don’t verify my identity?

Failure to complete the process on time may result in:

  • Being unable to file a confirmation statement
  • Financial penalties or fines
  • Potential offences under the ECCT Act

Can you help me verify my identify with Companies House?

As we are registered as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) with Companies House, PKB can verify your identity directly on behalf of our clients. A simple and secure process where we manage everything for you. Clients can access this service for a fee of £35 plus VAT.

If you have any questions about the new ID verification process or would like PKB to handle this for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
